Garden-to-Table
The farm-to-table movement is the current trend in the nutrition world. Farm-to-table refers to food that is locally and sustainably sourced. The movement brings us back to the basics and encourages us to enjoy fresh, simple foods. Wholesome food is paramount in developing healthy eating habits. Learning how to grow, harvest and prepare seasonal foods bridges The Organic Teaching Kitchen’s philosophy, building a healthy eating foundation.
Last winter, landscape designer Myra Marsocci, owner of Shades of Green, planted The Organic Teaching Garden at The Organic Teaching Kitchen. People will naturally become more interested in their food when they play an integral role in the process of bringing the food to the table. Freshly picked produce has more flavor and tastes sweeter, which encourages you to swap out processed fast food for local unaltered food.
The August hot sun produces tomatoes, cucumbers and summer squash. If you are in the Croton area, stop by to check out The Organic Teaching Garden’s raised vegetable beds, they are brimming with buds. Or try a class where you can experience a “hands-on” experience that focus on cooking with freshly harvested seasonal food from the garden.
