Beat The Heat With Cooling Foods
According to the principals of Ayurveda, the Indian ancient science of self-healing, summer is the “Pitta” season, the energetic principles of fire and water. Our eating habits and daily routines create homeostasis when they flow with the season. To keep Pitta in balance, consider choosing cooling foods to balance the elements when the temperature is reaching record highs.
Here are my tips to stay cool and hydrated when the mercury rises:
- Drink water at room temperature.
- Enjoy fresh coconut water.
- Eat ripe sweet fruits; avocado, berries, cherries, mangoes, peaches, plums and melons.
- Eat calm and cooling vegetables; cucumber, celery, snow peas, summer squash, dark leafy greens.
- Season your food with cooling herbs; coriander, ginger, lemon balm, mint
- Eat more salads.
- Drink fresh fruit and/or green smoothies.
- Enjoy cold soups.
- Minimize greasy foods.
- Minimize spicy foods
By consuming these cooling foods, you can combat the heat from the inside out. These foods are nature’s medicine for beating the heat of summer.
